Recommendations for birth, baby & beyond

Because let’s be honest, you wouldn’t even get a haircut without one

(and this is bigger than a haircut)

ONLINE RESOURCES

  1. A Child Grows in Brooklyn, an impressively thorough guide for BK parents with resources for everything from acupuncture to diaper delivery, to play groups

  2. Healthy Child Healthy World, mission: igniting a movement that inspires parents to protect young children from harmful chemicals

  3. Real Savvy Moms Go Green

  4. VBAC resources

  5. Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS)

LOCAL BIRTH STATS

  1. The Birth Survey, search consumer feedback of doctors, midwives, hospitals, birthing centers, and home births

  2. New York County hospitals maternity statistics

  3. Kings County hospitals maternity statistics

  4. New York State hospitals maternity statistics

I am a midwest transplant to NYC—via Seattle—and am totally enamored with this city. I currently live in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. Prior to that I lived in Manhattan, so those are the areas I know best. I’m always interested in growing my resource list (knowledge is power!), so if you have some great recommendations, I’d love to hear them. andrea@holisticdoulanyc.com

WELLNESS & HEALTHCARE

  1. Massage therapy

  2. Angela Crossman, LMT, NYC Massage Studio

  3. Yep, we’re related. Angela is my sister and an amazingly talented massage therapist. She has a special interest in pre and postnatal massage and I couldn’t recommend her more highly.

  4. Continuum Center for Health and Healing

  5. 245 Fifth Avenue at 28th Street, Manhattan

  6. Continuum Center for Health and Healing is an integrative health care clinic associated with Beth Israel. Many people with insurance don’t realize that this holistic haven may be an option for them. When I had Health Net insurance my visits there were covered 100%, check it out!

  7. Dr. Zina Kroner, Advanced Medicine

  8. 121 East 60th Street, Third Floor
    New York, New York 10022
    t: 212-838-4020

  9. I spent a few months as a holistic nurse practitioner student with Dr. Kroner as my preceptor and was thoroughly impressed. She is an MD and internist who uses a comprehensive and personal approach to health concerns and prevention strategies. She always looks for the cause of illness or imbalance, versus all too typical approach of mere symptom management. If you are looking for a partner in optimum health Dr. Kroner would be a great one to have by your side.

  10. Ryan Center

  11. Don’t have health care? Get on over to Ryan Center. The have 3 locations in Manhattan and it couldn’t be easier. If you are low-income without heath care just bring your most recent tax forms or paystub. They will get you all signed up and put you on a sliding fee scale or help you register for other programs for which you are eligible. Prescriptions are $10 each and lab work is included in your visit. It is a lifesaver for those times you’re without insurance.

  12. Callen-Lourde Community Health Center

  13. 256 W 18th St, Manhattan

  14. Callen-Lourde provides sensitive, quality health care and related services primarily to New York's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communitiesin all their diversityregardless of ability to pay. To further this mission, Callen-Lorde promotes health education and wellness and advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender health issues.

SOURCES OF GOOD HEALTHY EATS

  1. Whole Foods, your local co-ops and health food stores, and Trader Joes are always a good bet.

  2. Fresh Direct, for those times when getting out of the house is just one step too many. This is a great resource especially for those first 6 weeks post-partum.

  3. This year’s growing season is almost over, but if you like nutritious, whole foods, you will love joining a CSA. Check it out NYC CSAs here. I’ve belonged to CSAs in Minneapolis, Seattle and Manhattan and think they are just about the coolest thing ever.

GREEN BABY RESOURCES

  1. Diaperkind.com

  2. Cloth diaper service

  3. Lovemore

  4. Love-infused green fashion for babies, toddlers, and adults. There’s nothing cuter than little ones sporting the positive and oh-so-important message “love more.” To do right by your eco-boys and green-girls, Lovemore offers premium-quality onesies and t-shirts that are super-soft, come in vibrant colors, and are environmentally-friendly. Nurturing the next generation is easy and adorable with Lovemore. Oh, and I just happen to be Lovemore’s co-founder.
